Discover the Science

What exactly do we do in the water?

Think of the ocean as a giant crime scene, and we are the forensic team. Every fish, sea lion, and microscopic creature leaves behind tiny genetic "fingerprints"—invisible traces of DNA drifting in the current. Just like a scanner reads a barcode at the supermarket to identify a specific product, we filter a single liter of seawater to capture these genetic barcodes (environmental DNA). This allows us to identify species that are threatened, rare, elusive, or potentially harmfull to the ecosystem.

Meet your guide

Led by a working marine scientist

Your expedition is guided by Dr. Camila Mac Loughlin, a PhD marine researcher and professional snorkel guide based in La Paz. Driven by a deep connection to the Sea of Cortez, Camila bridges the gap between the laboratory and the ocean. She transforms traditional boat tours into hands-on scientific adventures, helping curious travelers uncover the hidden stories of Baja's incredible marine life.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you might be wondering

Do I need a science background?

Not at all! Our expeditions are designed for curious travelers of all backgrounds. Our PhD marine biologists guide you step-by-step through every part of the sampling and field microscopy process.

Is this suitable for kids?

Yes! We have successfully hosted children starting from 9 years old[cite: 1]. Participants under 9 are welcome and require direct adult supervision during water collection and field activities[cite: 1].

Is this a private experience?

Not necessarily! Our standard base rate covers private groups of up to 8 participants. However, smaller parties can join our waitlist or shared departures, and we comfortably accommodate larger groups up to 12[cite: 1].

What wildlife might we see?

Depending on your itinerary, you may encounter wild sea lions, whale sharks (seasonal), mobula rays, dolphins, diverse reef fish, and rich bird biodiversity in the protected waters of the Gulf of California.

What should I bring?

Bring your swimsuit, towel, comfortable layers (windproof-waterproof jacket during winter), reef-safe sun protection, and natural curiosity. Specific items like gourmet meals, catering options, or extra equipment vary by tour and are detailed in each expedition description.

Is snorkeling required?

Not at all! While snorkeling is a popular way to explore on our aquatic tours (like Balandra and Espíritu Santo), it is entirely optional. Water and plankton samples can be collected directly from the vessel or shoreline, making our scientific activities accessible to everyone regardless of whether they choose to enter the water or not[cite: 1].

How does the DNA sampling work?

Using professional-grade portable filtration systems, we filter three 1-liter samples of seawater, and a field negative control on site. The filter captures microscopic traces of environmental DNA (eDNA) shed by marine life.

What happens to the samples?

For our Standard Package, your samples are safely stored for future sequencing. If you choose our Premium Package or join as a Sequencing Angel, your sample goes straight through our complete genomic pipeline, and your discoveries are permanently published under your name in the global GenBank database!
