Sardine Run Mag Bay (Citizen Science Expedition)

8 Hours

Join us for an exhilarating citizen science expedition to witness the famous Magdalena Bay Sardine Run. Led by a PhD Marine Biologist, this high-action field day combines pelagic wildlife encounters with critical molecular ecology.

After an early morning overland journey to Puerto Chale, we will board our private, Starlink-equipped speedboat for 5 hours of active search & snorkeling amidst bait balls, predatory pelagic fish, and marine mammals. Right at the feeding grounds, we will collect critical seawater samples. Back on shore, we will deploy our mobile microscopy station to analyze live plankton and perform in situ environmental DNA (eDNA) vacuum filtration of the water we just swam in.

Standard vs. Premium: Complete the Science

Our Standard package delivers the complete field science experience, including hands-on eDNA sampling, live plankton microscopy, all expedition equipment, and guidance from a PhD Marine Biologist.

Upgrading to the Premium Package takes the science from the beach to the lab, directly funding the rigorous processing of the samples we collect together. This covers DNA extraction, amplification, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatic decoding, which allows us to create highly accurate wildlife inventories for your specific time and location. Ultimately, the genetic sequences from your expedition are formally published to GenBank (the global open-access genetic database) under your name, cementing your personal, lasting contribution to marine conservation.

Important Booking Note: The full price for this expedition is $3,500 MXN per seat or $24,500 MXN for a private boat (Standard) // $4,500 MXN per seat or $31,500 MXN for a private boat (Premium). Once weather is cleared, a 30% deposit secures your booking. The remaining balance will be collected via cash, card, or transfer upon check-in. Please note: A minimum of 6 passengers is required to confirm departure. If the minimum is not met, we will contact you 72 hours prior to discuss rescheduling, buyout options, or a full refund.

Seasonality & Weather Note: This expedition operates exclusively during the peak migratory window from October through December. Because it is highly dependent on ocean conditions (we cannot safely set sail in 12+ knot north winds), automated online booking is disabled. Please click the Enquiry tab to verify weather and availability.
