Sequencing Baja offers an exclusive, hands-on scientific experience that transforms your private journey in the Sea of Cortez into a mission of discovery. Guided by a PhD scientist, you will use cutting-edge environmental DNA technology to uncover the ocean's biodiversity, leaving a legacy of knowledge that directly contributes to the conservation of this global treasure.
Collect & filter DNA from water
Extract DNA
Decipher life's genetic code
Brief safety talk, then we sample the ocean like scientists
Learn how to collect a 1 L water sample
Label, log GPS/time, and record basic metadata
Family‑friendly; all gear provided
Back on shore / on board, we filter environmental DNA (eDNA) with a portable lab.
Hands‑on water filtration (1-2 hours)
Record data on the site of water collection
Optional: You can continue to process your sample in days 2 & 3 (see below)
See the invisible world live on a microscope!
Learn and observe plankton's most iconic organisms in real time
Compare your sightings with actual 3D printed plankton models
Take home amazing footage of the microscopic world
Our day 1 activity adds 1-3 hours on top of your chosen adventure (scroll down for options) • Small groups (4–10) • Ages 12+ (younger kids require adult supervision)
Meeting point: TBD depending on the agreed activity. Activities include snorkeling tours, visit to popular beaches, mangrove forests or freshwater oasis around Baja.
Good to know: Family‑friendly • English/Spanish spoken • No experience needed
Isolate the environmental DNA from your filter in a hands-on lab session, guided step-by-step. The final product is a tube of pure DNA extract that we'll send to the lab in the US for sequencing. You'll learn:
The process of breaking open cells to release their raw genetic material.
How to chemically purify the DNA, creating a research-grade sample ready for barcoding and sequencing.
Consider 4-5 hours for DAY 2 activities (morning / afternoon), including break times.
Ages 12+ are recommended. DNA extraction and PCR are not suitable for young kids. We do supply activities for a younger audience, but adult supervision will be required.
Timing and location will be determined based on day 1 activities.
Always good to know: Family‑friendly • English/Spanish spoken • No experience needed
When your sequences are decoded and ready, you'll be invited to log into for an online exploration of your biodiversity results:
Spot iconic taxa and unexpected guests
Get a digital report in your findings to explore further
See how your data will be shared into public repositories of biodiversity
